Bishop's statement on HHS Mandate proposals
February 8, 2013
Written By: Anne Marie Cox

Bishop Richard Pates issued the following statement on the most recent proposals on the HHS mandate.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan's statement on the most recent revisions of the HHS mandate highlights continuing deficiencies from the Catholic Church's perspective.

  1. The narrow understanding of a religious ministry.
  2. Continuing to compel church ministries such as Catholic education, healthcare ministries and Catholic charities to fund and facilitate services such as contraceptives, including abortion inducing drugs and sterilization that violate Catholic teaching.
  3. Disregard for conscience rights of for-profit business owners.

The Catholic Church will continue to dialogue with the Obama Administration in trying to achieve a solution that fulfills its pledge for such a solution on this issue. At the same time, remedies will continue to be pursued in the courts and legislative bodies. Save to
