Bishop Richard Pates, in his role as chair of the U.S. bishops' Committee on International Justice and Peace, introduced himself to the new Secretary of State, John Kerry. In the letter dated Feb. 6, Bishop Pates outlined the priorities of the U.S. bishops in countries abroad. "We welcome and appreciate our continuing dialogue with you and your department on these and other matters of mutual concern," wrote Bishop Pates.
