Bishop calls on Sec. Kerry to work for ceasefire in Syria
Bishop Richard Pates, in his role as chair of the U.S. bishops' Committee on International Justice and Peace, sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday urging him to work with other governments to obtain a ceasefire in Syria and create "a future for all Syrians, one that respects human rights and religious freedom." The same day he sent the letter, Pope Francis met with Jordan's King Abdullah II at the Vatican, where the pope urged dialogue and negotiation as the only option to end the conflict and violence.
